Ragging causing death of an innocent...high time we end it

How irresponsibly brutal can the youth become?A first year fresher in a medical college in himachal was mercilessly bashed in the process of 'ragging' by four seniors today, which caused him death! But unfortunately some still believe it as "harmless fun'. Such sweep of savagery should prompt us to recognize the enormity of physical, emotional and mental threat that an individual can go through in the process of 'ragging' .Ragging, is one of the burning issues plaguing our institutions.

There should be a complete ban on such practices. It usually happens in an avenge from the seniors ,thus continuing the malaise.Ragging causes plummentation of self confidence among the victims. It should rather be seen as a social evil in the society.

The solemnised process of introduction and interaction is imperative and must be done, but there can be other better means of doing the same.Interaction means discussion and sharing views, not imposing them.Interaction produces light, not heat.Reluctant students are often coercively made a part of this.Medical colleges, engineering colleges and hostels are the ones which are mostly boisterous regarding the issue. Its time we put an end to it before other innocents fall pray of the same.Adequate strictness must be maintained by both the supreme and the high courts, cancelling the license of education of students who are caught ragging.Should'nt we interact with juniors at an equal level rather than bossing over them and imposing our sadistic whims and fancies on them?Isnt it time that we break off this unjustifiable tradition?

  1. i very much agree with you. ragging is something which should include a introduction so that a healthy relation is set between the senior and junior. it should include the will of both. Forcing is not the way.
Stripping, Urinating like in case of sanjay and beating like in case of Aman Kachroo, the boy from HP, shows how brutal and inhumane the Ragging stuff can get.
this Kind of Ragging is uncalled for and should be checked.....

  2. Nyc article i muz say..........Ragging is a social evil and it shud be brought to a halt!!!!!!
Cases like Aman Kachroo n our delhi university case of Swami Shraddhanand college where two seniors thrashed a fresher n he wos hospitalised shud be immediately brought to a permanent halt!!!!!!!!
especially in engineering n medical college strict precautions shud be taken against students who practise ragging in its most unacceptable form!!!!!!!!!
ahem......enuff bt nyc work sakshi try to make it more popular bt no personal gains in d blog!!!!!!!!:D

  3. I dont totally agree with your view point.
Ragging upto a certain extent is fun, both for the ragger and the ragged.
but when it gets out of the hand and goes dirty, just like the case u said, thats when the ban should be implied and not on the entire ragging thing.
I personally wouldn't refer to that as ragging, and i agree with what Rohit said, it is more of an inhumane act and has been disguised by the name of ragging.

  4. Ragging as the term has been explained was a very diffrent experience for me i would call it an orientation rather than being ragged.... it was a sort of welcome to the world of adult citizens who practice their right to express for the first time and want others to agree with whatever they have to say.....for me it was a real help to open up in the new cirmstances.......but on the other hand the extreme cases as mentioned by other readers cannot be neglected and certain rules should be defined to check such episodes and also should be regulated time to time.

  5. correctly said, there must essentially exist some specific boundaries to this.understandably every individual has a different perspective of the word "fun", which is what is the root for all glitches.
'self consciousness' should be aroused in the youth to atleast be able to independently distinguish between whats acceptable and what not.the idea of "ragging" today has changed and "fun" has varied connotations.

  6. Hi there,

nice article. it would have been great if you could have explained a bit rather than just criticizing. We all know that ragging is a blot on the society but you could have mentioned steps to curb it.
Just by the way, the supreme court has strict orders against ragging and has issued another statement today. I am a blogger with the Janagraha-an NGO giving the youth the status they deserve and i would like to let you know that you need to be more precise and a little bit more factual.... happy blogging

  7. hi dear,
really nice article, i must say that u have put in ur 100 percent to make it a successful event and it has really made us to think about whr the youth of the country is goin.... aman khachroo the recent victim of this brutal action was killed just becoz he was new to the college i do not think this is the crime that shud fetch him such a punishment. and it is not only aman but N number of people who face this issue....especially in the hostels of different institutions...Sr get whteva they want to get done from the freshers and in a way this tradition goes on just becoz the fresher when next year becomes the Sr. wants to behav ein the same way as it was done to him. so it is a vicious circle.....but rather than the govt takin steps it shud b we ie the youth shud realise what they are doin...and the change sgould be brought

  8. How do you propose to arouse the concept of "self consciousness"? by talking, by jailing or what?

  9. Hey Alok,
"self consciousness" is not something that can be inculcated by "jailing", but certainly by spreading awareness. An attribute like such is usually a repercussion of the values induced by either schools, colleges or parental influence... My attempt here is to make them realize that ragging is immoral and unethical...

  10. In response to MARCH 16th comment:
if you could read a bit more in the comments, you would find ways suggested to reduce the malaise.
In India, untill a major mishappening occurs or made into one, no solutions are given to either reduce or erradicate the issue...Certainly there were various existant laws to curb ragging, but as you and I , all know, inspite of them, such a loss was suffered by many parents in the recent past,
law passed by the supreme court the day before is post sensationalisation of such hapening, and if doing so can make the government and respective authorities pull their socks up, its a patt on our backs!
